Dorotheos Evelpidis, Metropolitan of Korytsa (1879)
Dorotheos originated from Rysio of Bithynia in the eparchy of Chalcedon. He studied at Athonias, Rizareio School, and the Theological School at Chalkis. In 1851 he was in tonsured a monk at Vatopaidi Monastery and was assigned as its Chief Secretary; later he was made teacher and headmaster of the Athonias School. In 1855 he was appointed professor at the Theological School of Chalkis. In 1857 he was ordained archimandrite and was assigned as the Monastery’s exarch to the metochia in Bessarabia. In 1871 he was appointed director of the Trade School of Chalkis. In 1874 he was made Great Chancellor (Protosyngellos) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, wheras in 1879 he was elected Metropolitan of Korytsa and Selasphoros. On 8 May, while touring about his diocese, he was swept away by the waters of the Aoos River and drowned at the age of fifty. He wrote and published commentaries on the words of Saint John Chrysostom regarding priesthood and also wrote a biography of the Saint. His artoclasia bearing his name, a gift to the Skete of Saint Demetrius, is preserved in the Sacristy of Vatopaidi Monastery, whereas a great number of his letters can be found in the Monastery’s archive.
