Kyrillos V, Patriarch of Constantinople (1748–1751) (1751–1757)
Kyrillos V (called Karakallos before monasticism) was born in Dimitsana (or at Nafplio) in the late seventeenth century. In 1715, during the reoccupation of Peloponnisos by the Turks, Kyrillos was captured and taken to Constantinople. After his ransom and release he went to Mount Athos for a short time and then on to Patmos in order to study at the Patmiada School, where he became a monk. In 1737, he was elected Metropolitan of Meleniko and, in 1745, of Nicomedia (1745–1748); he was elected Patriarch in 1748. He has been described as scholarly and ascetic, and well-educated. During the time of his patriarchate, the Athonias School was founded by Vatopaidi Monastery. For its organization he published three sigillia (1750, 1753, 1754) and assigned its administration to Evgenios Voulgaris (1753–1759). In 1757 he was deposed and exiled to Cyprus. Later he went to Mount Athos and settled at the Skete of Saint Anne, where he died on the 27th of June 1775.
