Makarios Papageorgopoulos, Metropolitan of Thessaloniki (1465-1546)

Makarios was born on the island of Zakinthos (Zante) in 1465. In 517 he was raised to the Metropolitan Throne of Thessaloniki, having been transferred from the Metropolis of Corinth, which he had pastored for ten years (1507–1517). Having remained in his new position for a few years, he retired to Vatopaidi Monastery, where he became a great schema monk and received the name Mihail. In 1546 he died at the Monastery. Makarios was a scholar and his valuable collection of manuscripts and printed books remained at the Monastery, along with his episcopal encolpion and seal.
