Nikandros of Vatopaidi (1840-1891)

Nikandros was born in 1840 in Kazaviti on Thasos. He went to Vatopaidi Monastery in 1858 and became a prohegumenos in 1889. He studied at the Rizareios School and at the Theological School of the University of Athens. He served well at the Monastery as a secretary, as an accountant and as a representative to the Holy Community of Athos. Under his care the mansion-like konaki (a residence) in Karyes was built. He was the first to write a history about the Athonias School, which was published at Neologos of Constantinople in 1886. He departed this life at the age of fifty in 1891 from the effects of a deadly illness.
