Porphyrios, Metropolitan of Arta († 1838)

Porphyrios, Metropolitan of Arta († 1838)

Porphyrios was born in Bithynia of Asia Minor. In 1806 he received the Bishopric of Ellasona as an honor from Ali Pasha of Ioannina. In 1813 he was elected Metropolitan of Arta, and he actively participated in the preparations for the Greek Revolution. He was captured and exiled to Mount Athos, to Vatopaidi Monastery. When the Greek Revolution began, he went to the Greek mainland where he actively participated in the struggle for the Nation’s rebirth. He reposed in 1838 as the first Metropolitan of Aitolokarnania.  His letters, which show that he was a brother of the Monastery, are preserved in the Monastery’s archives.
