Serapheim, Patriarch of Constantinople (1757–1761)

Serapheim, Patriarch of Constantinople (1757–1761)

Patriarch Serapheim came from Epirus. He was the deacon of the Metropolitan of Drystra around 1731/2. Later he was chosen Metropolitan of Philippopolis and then Ecumenical Patriarch. He resigned from the throne and settled at the small ancient Monastery of Xystris – which later became the Vatopaidi Skete of Saint Andrew – and he was the second founder of the cell and the church of Saint Anthony. In 1771 he participated in the Orloff Revolt and returned with the Russian ships to Russia, where he reposed sometime around 1776.
