Arkadios of Vatopaidi, hierodeacon († 1934)

Photograph of hierodeacon Arkadios in the midst of civilians.

Arkadios was from Skopje of Proconnesus. Having settled at Vatopaidi Monastery in 1882, he was ordained a deacon in 1887, and in 1899 he became a council member. A prolific writer with a deep knowledge of the Monastery’s archives, he is known primarily for compiling the catalogue of Vatopaidi manuscripts, which was co-published in 1924 with the scholarly former Metropolitan of Leontopolis, Sophronios Evstratiadis. In 1939 Arkadios completed the writing of the history of the Monastery of Vatopaidi, which for the first time exploited unpublished material taken from its own archives. He died in 1934, having yet to publish his History. Following the recent discovery of his second amended manuscript text of the History, plans have been made for its publication.

His diploma from the Rizareios School with the signature of Saint Nektarios, Bishop of Pentapolis as the director of the School. Preserved in the archives of Vatopaidi Monastery.
