EXPLORE THE STORIES

Through the short narratives, explore the history of the Monastery, its relics, heritage and tradition.

THE MEANING OF THE NAME

St. Pavlos of Xeropotamos came to the area, where the Monastery is today, to live as a recluse. The Monastery he founded has survived for ten centuries, always evolving and changing, yet remaining in the footsteps of its great founder and his disciples. Let's take a brief look at its course through time.

THE GIFTS OF THE MAGI

The redolence of myrrh, the value of gold and the outreach of the incense were the expression of the first human recognition and honor to the incarnated God. The gifts of the Wise Men to Christ, relics unique in the world, are reverently protected in the Monastery of Saint Pavlos.

THE FRESCOES IN THE CHAPEL OF ST. GEORGIOS

The expressive murals in the chapel of Agios Georgios are related to the painting of Antonios in the old katholikon of the Monastery of Xenophontos, in fact it has been proposed to be attributed to him. They articulate a special
artistic discourse, having assimilated influences from both dominant currents in 16th century painting.
